Florida auto insurance: a no-fault state

Florida is a no-fault state. After an accident, your own policy pays part of your medical costs first, no matter who caused it.

To register a vehicle, the law requires at least:

  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP): $10,000. It pays 80% of necessary medical expenses, up to $10,000, no matter who caused the crash.
  • Property Damage Liability (PDL): $10,000.

Is the minimum enough?

The minimum doesn't include Bodily Injury liability for other people. It isn't required for most drivers but can be required after certain violations. Without it, you could pay out of pocket if you injure someone.

If your car is financed or leased, the lender will usually require full coverage: collision and comprehensive.

Florida home insurance

Florida home insurance prices depend heavily on wind risk and the age and condition of the roof. Older homes are often asked for inspections:

  • 4-Point: reviews roof, electrical, plumbing and HVAC.
  • Wind Mitigation: documents wind-resistant features and may help with discounts.
  • Flood: most home policies don't cover flood; it's bought separately.

Florida health insurance

Florida uses the federal Marketplace (HealthCare.gov). Depending on your income and household, you may qualify for financial help that lowers the monthly premium. Private alternatives also exist and work differently from ACA plans.

Life and business insurance

Life insurance protects your family if you pass away. Florida contractors often need general liability and certificates of insurance for their clients.
