Insurance in Texas
In Texas, the driver who causes an accident pays for the damage, and weather (hail, storms and coastal hurricanes) drives home insurance. Here's what to know.

Texas auto insurance: the 30/60/25 minimum
Texas is an at-fault state: the driver at fault (and their insurer) pays for damages. The law requires at least liability coverage of:
- $30,000 bodily injury per person.
- $60,000 bodily injury per accident.
- $25,000 property damage.
PIP and uninsured drivers
Texas insurers must offer you PIP and uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage. You can reject them, but it must be in writing.
If your car is financed, the lender will usually require full coverage.
Texas home insurance
Hail and wind are common causes of claims in Texas. When comparing policies, look at:
- The wind and hail deductible, sometimes a percentage of the home's value.
- The roof's age and material.
- In coastal counties, if a private insurer turns down your wind and hail coverage, you can apply to the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) for a separate policy.
- Flood is usually bought separately.
Texas health insurance
Texas uses the federal Marketplace (HealthCare.gov). Depending on income and household, you may qualify for help lowering the premium. Private alternatives with different rules also exist.
Business insurance in Texas
Contractors, restaurants and service businesses often need general liability, commercial auto and, depending on the case, workers comp. Workers comp isn't required for most private Texas employers, but it is for those with government contracts, and other contractors may require it. If you don't carry it, you must notify your employees and the state.
